It seemed that several years ago every artist & their dog had a website. The truth be told, maintaining a website is expensive financially but also in terms of time. Most of the artists I know would prefer their painting to website baby-sitting.

Success in the arts has found a home with two highly credentialed institutions in NYC. When a child, I went to see Margot Fonteyn & Rudolf Nureyev in Portland. They were touring with the Royal Ballet. I would go to the stage door & wait inside the hallway stairs to collect my autographs. I have five ballet programs from Portland where I have original signatures within from that era in my life. (The early sixties)  

I have great plans to revisit Portland as an arts mecca, with my personal taste & formal education now under my belt. I'll keep you in the loop.

Interview with Brett Deubner & Peggy Molloy dated May 8, 2014...

MOLLOY:  Where are you currently located?

DEUBNER:  I live in Glen Ridge, New Jersey, 10 miles from New York City.

MOLLOY:  When did you begin your training?

DEUBNER:  I started playing the violin at the age of 9 years old in the 4th grade. I was the product of the public schools, then started private study shortly thereafter.

MOLLOY:  What are your thoughts about becoming successful in the current music industry environment?

DEUBNER:  I think the music industry has always been competitive. You have to be relentless in attaining your dreams.  Performing music has always been rewarding.  As a soloist who gets to travel the world performing for audiences of different languages & customs, I am always amazed at how similar everyone really is.  We  have the same concerns as parents, as citizens of the world, & everyone loves & needs music!  Perhaps the musical landscape shifts or the economy falters, but we will always sing our children to sleep or clap our hands.  Never has it been more important to musicians to have other skills: to develop one's own website, to create interesting musical programs, & to better learn how to engage with the public.   

MOLLOY:  Do you compose?

DEUBNER:   I don't compose. I have written a few cadenzas to some concerti & classical era sonatas & I have worked extensively with composers on their works they have written for me, to help them more effectively & sometimes efficiently, get their message across on the viola. My main role is to be the messenger of the composer, whether is is a Bach gamba sonata or a sonata written for me that I am premiering.

MOLLOY:  What are your short term goals?

DEUBNER:  As a performer, I am constantly striving to put together as fulfilling & varied a season as possible.  This can be very challenging as I am my own manager. I am usually booking engagements two seasons ahead. The repertoire is always a combination of new works, world premieres, & standards.

MOLLOY: Your thoughts about long term goals?

DEUBNER:  Its important to realize that goals as just that: goals. If you actually reach them, then you set them too low.  That's the great thing about what we do as artists, there is no end to the musical process. This is a wonderful thing because as we mature as people, so does our music making.

In closing, Deubner will offer a one-wek seminar in Viola in Provence, France.  Equally at home with young students, Deubner enjoys working with students of all ages.  Deubner is on the faculty of the Round Top International Festival in Texas as well as being the Artistic Director & founder of the Glen Ridge based concert series "Music and More" serving the NYC metropolitan area.

Patricia Sennott is completing the task of setting up 20 new pieces of art for the Sewell Gallery in Eureka. She is the featured artist for the month of May with her reception May 3 during Main Street's "Arts Alive". Her success and prices will both only be going UP!

Educator, silk painter, & monotype print specialist, Sennott's gentle nature & intense talent will both be on display.

An HSU Studio Arts graduate, her academic career began in Kentucky. After graduating from Humboldt, it wasn't until she experienced a week long workshop at Bennington College in Vermont that she was introduced to her new love & voice of expression,... monotype prints.

"Empty Mansions: The Mysterious Life of Huguette Clark and the Spending of a Great American Fortune"

I was so struck with the beauty & naturalness of the doll collection that was featured in the book titled : "Empty Mansions" that I wanted to present the reflections of a child's imagination.

An era of quiet solitude provided the protagonist her backlit set of dolls & personal history. Cramming her mansions with precious friends, her dolls, Huguette Clark preferred a single room in a hospital setting to participating in the "real world".

Paper dolls, bisque dolls, ritual dolls, teddy bears have all been part of every civilization throughout history. Dolls are art in many instances.

Parellel Universes anyone? Clark's doll collection is documented in the above book available on Amazon. 

 

Humboldt Ballroom Dance Chapter To Celebrate 20 Years

 

“As a founding ballroom dance group member, it is very rewarding to see the grand growth of social dance in our community in the last 20 years” - Molloy.

One big change in the last 20 years is the name and structure of the original organization, previously known as the United States Association of Ballroom Dancing  in America (USABDA). The organization now includes Ballroom Dancing supported by the Olympics under the umbrella of  the DanceSport Federation.  Providing for education of Social Dance for children throughout the country is also part of the USA Dance Mission.

The current Board of Directors for the local Redwood Chapter # 4013 includes Debbie Weist. Julie Hayes-Ryman, Shelley Sloan, Jason Slyter, and Peggy Molloy. While the group has designated titles, they all help one another as a team to get the monthly dances up and running. They are continually on the lookout for prospective members for future Boards, and can always use volunteers for setup and takedown of each event. The public is welcome.

With long term goals to celebrate the 20 year benchmark, the immediate plans revolve around the Redwood Coast Jazz Festival. The USA Dance group will have a food booth on Thursday, March 27 at the Adorni Center. Businesses who would like to donate to the food inventory are welcome. They will have a credit listed at the booth.

Social Media has shifted the methods that the local chapter communicates with its members. With two Facebook accounts and Twitter updates available, these digital vehicles are combined with the traditional press releases and fax machines to radio stations and newspapers.
